Ed Hopkins (He/Him)

Founder

My role at Dark Green PR:

In addition to running the business and ensuring the delivery of our projects, I'm responsible for the growth and development of our team. I also work closely with each of our clients to develop the best stories possible from their business and ensure those stories get the attention they deserve from the media and beyond.

What I believe in:

I believe we are all collectively responsible for the climate emergency we find ourselves in. It’s our job to fix it, innovate and work together; we can’t afford to kick the can down the road for the next generation to deal with as it’ll be too late by then. In particular, I believe communications has a key role to play as we push for a more sustainable world.

The story behind the picture:

My earliest memory of witnessing the effects of climate change was in the Swiss Alps, where my grandparents lived. I remember as a teenager seeing the retreat of glaciers year on year and the shortening of the winter seasons. I’ll never forget the feeling of realisation as I accepted how delicate our planet’s climate is. That realisation planted a seed that has since developed into a strong passion for building a more sustainable, greener world.

Amy Nicholas (She/Her)

Media Consultant

My role at Dark Green PR:

As a Media Consultant at Dark Green PR, I lead team growth and work closely with clients to craft and promote compelling stories for media attention, enhancing our clients' visibility and reputation

What I believe in:

Many people will say that they hope to leave the world a better place than how they found it. I believe that this desire has never been more vital than it is now when the existence of life on earth (both for us and countless other species) is so critically threatened. If we do not act now, through both personal and systemic change, to mitigate climate disaster, we will all suffer the consequences — and the most underprivileged people on our planet will be impacted the most. Therefore, when fighting for climate justice, we must recognise the intrinsic connection with social justice issues and address both with the same energy and urgency.

My Background

l am a regionally and nationally published journalist covering various news and feature stories. I have interviewed celebrated public figures, from Olympic Gold Medallist Helen Glover to feminist author and campaigner Laura Bates. I have written several articles on climate change, from the coverage of local climate activist groups to innovative farming practices aiming to overthrow soy within the UK's dairy cow industry. I also teach dance and performing arts to children and young adults and have been doing so since age 16.

Head of content

My role at Dark Green PR:

As head of content, I oversee the creation of Dark Green’s written and verbal content. This includes drafting press releases, opinion pieces, articles and briefing documents. In short, i make sure our client’s message cuts through the noise!

What I believe in:

I believe that a story told well can change the world. The climate crisis remains the largest challenge our species faces. The way the challenge is presented in the media will directly affect the way it is solved. I believe that strong, positive and compelling climate communications is crucial if we are to mitigate the worst scenarios of future warming.

My Background:

I’ve worked on building the reputation of thought leaders, CEOs and policymakers for the best part of 8 years. While working at a range of small start-ups and big agencies, I’ve helped clients in the travel, social justice and climate space to raise their profile and make their arguments heard.

Connie Porteous (She/Her)

Account executive

My role at Dark Green PR:

As an Account Executive, I work with a diversity of clients, from non-profits to corporations, to create and execute effective media relations that raise awareness and inspire action for a greener and more sustainable world. My main focuses are media relations, content creation and client management, as well as applying my ecological knowledge and passion to my work.

What I believe in:

I strongly believe that effective communication concerning the climate crisis is of the utmost importance in raising awareness and inspiring action. By clearly conveying sustainability causes, the urgency issues and the potential consequences, we can engage both communities and policymakers in meaningful discussions. Through open and honest dialogue, we can foster understanding, dispel misinformation, and encourage collective responsibility which is at the forefront for any forward-moving change. By empowering individuals with knowledge and encouraging them to take action, I believe we can create a global movement towards a more sustainable and resilient future.

My Background:

Natural sciences has always been a deep passion of mine, and how anthropogenic activities have a direct effect on the environment. I have an Environmental Sciences degree from the University of Reading, in which I completed my dissertation surrounding the importance of message framing techniques for climate solution communications. I have a background in ecology and biodiversity, where I have contributed towards scientific studies assessing the health of kelp forests in South Africa.

Megan Grant (She/Her)

Account executive

What I believe in:

Sustainability and the regeneration of the natural are pillars that we have to begin incorporating into every societal framework. There are fundamental, vital changes that need to be made to the structures we have built - and the next 20 years will be a decisive time for those changes. I believe that consistent, engaging and transparent communication will be key to realising those changes; and that’s what I hope to help achieve at Dark Green.

The story behind the picture:

I graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2022. While at university, I became passionate about changing the way we produce and consume food. After graduating I spent time volunteering at food banks, working on regenerative agriculture and biodynamic viticulture projects, and working with the sustainability team for a Michelin-starred restaurant. It became clear to me that the problems with our food system are inextricably tied to the climate crisis - and that its causes and effects are where change needs to start. I know that communication will be a vital tool to achieve change, and since starting with Dark Green PR in June 2023 I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to put that into action.

Bryony Sheridan (She/Her)

Account executive

My role at Dark Green PR:

As an Account Executive, I specialise in a variety of communications services such as media mapping and news monitoring, as well as content creation. I also organise and staff interviews, liaise with clients and manage media relations.

What I believe in:

I believe that the climate crisis intersects with and worsens almost every plight of our time. Everyone has a stake in this fight, and it is essential for the welfare of humans, other animals, and nature that we tackle each aspect of planetary breakdown. I believe that communication is key to doing so, as we must help as many people as possible to recognise and discuss the problems at hand, as well as the available solutions, in order to make meaningful changes and improve the quality of life on this planet for all.

The story behind the picture:

I graduated from the University of Cambridge with a first-class degree in Human, Social, and Political Sciences in 2021. Throughout my degree, I tailored my studies in line with my environmental interests, completing modules on the intersection of gender and the environment, and a dissertation exploring the impact of shame on achieving environmental justice and social transformation. I was also keenly involved in a range of environmental initiatives on campus, such as distributing free environmentally-conscious menstrual products for students whilst serving as the Women’s & Gender Equalities Officer of my college. Since university, I have gained experience in plant-based and environmental spaces, and have sought to work with those dedicated to protecting the natural world and all of its inhabitants.

Dr Joshua Wells (He/Him)

Policy and Ethics Consultant

My role at Dark Green PR:

As the climate crisis worsens, businesses have a growing responsibility to take action and protect the world around us. My role here at Dark Green is to help guide and advise our clients on how they can improve from an environmental ethics and policy standpoint.

What I believe in:

I believe that climate change is one of the great threats of our time, and humanity is on the precipice of an unforgivable moral failure if we do not change the way we behave.  We owe this effort to combat climate change to those who are going to suffer most severely. We also owe it to future generations and to all life on this planet.

The story behind the picture:

MA in PPE from the University of York, and a PhD in Climate Ethics from the University of Reading. My educational background has been focused on understanding how to address ethical problems related to climate justice. So far, I have presented climate research papers at 15 political philosophy conferences including events at the universities of Cambridge, Oxford and Hamburg.  In addition, I am a published author on the question of how animal rights and climate justice are complementary concepts. I have also provided book reviews for the Journal of Environmental Politics, as well as the Journal of Ethics, Policy and the Environment.

Sophie Lemom (She/Her)

Technology Consultant

My role at Dark Green PR

Using my experience from the technology sector and academic training (specifically robotics, nuclear technology and gravity physics), I advise Dark Green clients on the latest innovations relevant to their respective sectors. As we work with companies on a green mission, it's crucial we keep them up to date with the newest technology available and guide them on how they can use it to help achieve their goals.

What I believe in

We all have a responsibility on this planet, and play a vital role. When you are sick you make changes to heal - now the planet is sick, so I believe it is all of our responsibility to make the necessary changes for it to heal. I am an advocate of starting small by making gradual changes to your diet, the products you buy and the amount of plastic you use. This could be becoming vegan a few times a week to using refillable containers and products. However, one thing we can’t deny is the difference in access various parts of society have when making these environmental changes - privilege exists here/check your privilege. I strongly believe in supporting those in lower socioeconomic positions to be able to make these changes for them and their families, in a cost effective and healthy way. This also ties to the racial differences we can see when examining who is affected by climate change the most. We need to make sure the decisions from the richest countries have a sustainable and positive effect on indigenous populations.

My background

After finishing my masters in Physics at the University of Nottingham, broadening my friendship group and the food I was eating, my outlook on the consumption of meat, the mass production of meat and the effect it had on the environment drastically changed. I started to learn more about veganism, climate change and sustainability, understanding the positive effect you can have on the environment by making simple changes to your diet and the products you use. I am now an advocate and Influencer in the food space, sharing simple vegan and vegetarian recipes for others to try to make those gradual day to day changes; and I am constantly challenging myself to make personal changes to help battle climate change.

John Sargent (He/Him)

Digital Marketing Consultant

My role at Dark Green PR

I advise on the ways organisations can maximise their visibility online and improve their bottom-line results through digital channels. I focus on paid search engine marketing as well as biddable options across social media and display networks.  In particular, I help organisations understand how their business goals translate to their digital objectives, as well as what to do (and not to do!) to help achieve these. I help plan digital activity by being both objective and ethical in helping decide what to do, when and why.

What I believe in

I believe that the agency model of encouraging more spending to grow retainers has lost trust and is outdated. Being able to focus on doing an excellent job should also pass on the rewards of needing to work less to hit the same results over time as things become more efficient. Passing this on to the organisations you work with and having a genuine working relationship as an extension of an in-house team is far more beneficial to both parties, and I'm proud to be able to offer this kind of advice and help to ethical and green organisations.

My background

My speciality is Biddable Media campaigns, especially Paid Search, where I helped build media campaigns for some of the world's largest tech and e-commerce brands, including developing best practices for Google's own playbook used in £100MM+ campaigns today. I have since applied this knowledge to businesses of all sizes, both agency and client-side, from start-ups to blue chips.
